How do I go about selling a written-off vehicle?
An insurance write-off refers to a vehicle that has sustained significant damage or mechanical failure, making repair costs exceed its overall value. When a vehicle is written off, it is classified into one of four categories (A, B, S, or N) based on the severity of the damage
Once your insurer declares your car a write-off, your policy is automatically canceled, you receive a payout, and the vehicle becomes the insurer’s property. Selling a scrap car can be confusing, with fluctuating metal prices and unreliable buyers. That’s why we take the guesswork out of it. Our expert team monitors the UK scrap market daily to ensure you always get a fair and competitive price for your vehicle. With our trusted network of Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs), you can be confident that your car will be disposed of responsibly and in full compliance with DVLA regulations.
Types of write-off categories
Category A
The most severe classification. The car must be completely scrapped and can never return to the road.
Category B
Similar to Category A, but some parts may be salvaged for reuse. However, the car itself can never be driven again. ‘B’ is often associated with ‘Break.’
Category S
Stands for ‘Structural’ damage. These vehicles can be repaired and legally returned to the road. Previously known as Category C.
Category N
Stands for ‘Non-Structural’ damage. These are usually less damaged than Category S vehicles and can be repaired and driven again. Previously known as Category D.
You are not always required to return a Category S or N vehicle to your insurer. In some cases, you may negotiate to buy it back and repair it yourself. If you plan to return a Category S vehicle to the road, you must re-register it with the DVLA. For Category N, you must notify the DVLA of its status. Once your insurer declares your car a write-off, your policy is automatically canceled, you receive a payout, and the vehicle becomes the insurer’s property.
